YEREVAN, /ARKA/. Armenian Defense Minister David Tonoyan and a team of representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), led by the head of ICRC’s Delegation to Armenia, Claire Meitro, had a meeting today in Yerevan to look into the current status of cooperation between the Ministry of Defense and the ICRC Delegation to Armenia, and also explored ways to increase the effectiveness of the partnership.
The Defense Ministry said the parties also spoke about the growing tension reported recently on Armenia’s border with Azerbaijani exclave Nakhichevan. Expressing concern over threats to the life, health and property of civilians, Meitro expressed readiness to carry out a pilot project to reduce risks in one of the most vulnerable Armenian communities, located near the border, jointly with relevant Armenian structures.
The pilot project involves construction of protective walls at schools, kindergartens and the most shelled areas, as well as awareness-raising activities among the population.
The parties discussed also a set of issues related to the activities jointly implemented by the ICRC and the Armenian Commission on Prisoners, Hostages and Missing Persons.
